Located only 2 to 2½ hours by road from Mumbai, nestled amidst lush hills in Shahapur (Thane district) is the gorgeous Birds Nest Resort — an elegant break-out from the city live, and ideal for busy souls who want solace, fresh air and a slice of the wild within reach of home.
The property began as a small family farmhouse, and in the pandemic years became a boutique resort, with the goal of preserving every tree — a few even grow through the roof of the restaurant, which itself takes the shape of a bird’s nest when seen from above. The vision: reconnecting guests with nature in comfort. Today, 14 private cottages, vast gardens, water features, and a “machan-style” high-platform lounge encourage everyone to take deep breaths and slow down.
Situated at Kharivali–Kinhavali, Shahapur (PIN 421403); the journey of 95 km from Mumbai airport is through hills, streams and tribal settlements. The isolation is refreshing but still accessible.
There are bungalows, double rooms, suites or family cottages to choose from and all are air conditioned and with en suite bathrooms, tea/coffee maker, work desk, seating area and a private veranda some offering a garden or pool view. Interiors are simple but sophisticated and comfortable, with spaces that flow and feel open and light, and large windows that expose the outdoors.
Within the open- air tree canopies of the Ghosla Restaurant, meals are served. The menu is Indian, with vegetarian and halal choices. Guests are served breakfast buffets (continental, full English/Irish, vegetarian), brunch, high tea, lunch and dinner in a rustically-modern setting that has been built around the trees themselves.

Birds Nest is not just another resort — it is intentionally made for the birds, and the nature it depends on. No trees needed to be felled; rather, cottages and restaurants wind around the existing growth in a way that feels inhabited and eco-conscious. The resort does attract bird-watchers, as its name implies. The sound of birds, the greenscape at every turn and the feeling of peace are hard to come by closer to the city bustle.
Green setting with outdoor swimming pool — for leisure or for laps.
Machan Lounge – A non conforming elevated wooden hideout between the branches perfect for bird watching & quiet reading
Indoor / outdoor games: Mini Golf, Squash / Racquetball, bicycle parking, picnic area and walking/jogging paths around landscaped garden
Tour desk assists in local day outings, treks, bird-watching, falls visit etc.
Other amenities: free Wi-Fi, power backup, CCTV, housekeeping, room service, free parking, first-aid, 24/7 security, luggage assistance; resort is pet-free and non-smoking all areas.
Birding & Wildlife – Nestled between the foothills of the Western Ghats, Shahapur has strong birdlife — while the resort is not in a protected park, the area forms part of a network of forests, rivers and tribal patches. Just a 1–2 hour drive away, the popular Karnala Bird Sanctuary is home to more than 220 bird species including migratory and resident ones such as Malabar parakeet, nilgiri wood-pigeon and ashy minivet, making it the perfect spot for short birdwatching treks.
A good birding site is the Panje–Dongri wetland which is a new hot-spot near Uran/Navi Mumbai. Seasonal migrants (including flamingoes) are widely visible from November to March, approximately 90 km from the resort.
Trekking, Forts & Waterfalls – For trekking enthusiasts, the region has to offer handfull of treks like Ajoba fort, Bhimashankar and forested hills, as well as small waterfalls in monsoon (Vihigaon, Umbrella falls near Bhandardara). Bhandardara region (~ 180 km) – a bit longer drive, however, the treks are stellar: mount Kalsubai (maharashtra’s highest), Ratangad, Harishchandragad, along with waterfalls like the Umbrella & Randha – good if you are planning a long trip/return route.
Culture & Local Villages – Shahapur area still has the charm of rural Maharashtrian way of life – small tribal and farming villages, abysmally old temples, ghats and dams and local markets once in a while. The pace is unhurried, and guests are frequently greeted with a friendly and casual manner.
When to go: October to February for pleasant weather and seasonal migrant birds; monsoon (June to September) for verdant countryside and waterfalls (though you may encounter roadblocks and heavy rain).
Transport:
BY CAR: NH-48 via Panvel–Kharivali–Shahapur; it is around 2–2 ½ hours drive from Mumbai city or airport.
By train: Fast train to Khardi or Khadavli station (20–25 km away) followed by a local taxi.
What to take: Light Cottons during day, warm garments for early mornings and late evenings, rain gear during monsoon; good walking shoes; binoculars and camera; mosquito repellent.
Activities: Nature walk, birdwatching from machan, swim or relax by pool, and indoor games. Off the site- Visit karnala sanctuary, go to waterfalls like Vihigaon, trek to Ajoba/ Bhimashankar forts.
Ideal duration of stay: A 2-night weekend is enough to relax, enjoy the resort amenities, dine slowly and maybe do one local excursion. A 3-to-4-night stay permits greater immersion in nature and excursions beyond the site.
